Risultati del Campionato mondiale 2009 di Beach Wrestling

Il campionato del mondo 2009 si è disputato ad Obzor (Bulgaria), con 14 nazioni partecipanti, incluse USA e Brasile.
Nelle due categorie maschili ha dominato la Bulgaria, che ha vinto in entrambe le classi di peso. Nella +85kg Dimitar Kumchec ha battuto Kurtanidze ex olimpionico ma non più al top dal 2004.
Per quanto riguarda le categorie femminili, le africane del Thiès FILA traning centre hanno vinto tutto.

"OBZOR, Bulgaria – The two U.S. wrestlers who competed at the World Beach Wrestling Championships this year were beaten and eliminated in the first round on Saturday.

Beaten in their opening matches were Jeff Funicello (Gilbert, Ariz./American Pankration-Sunkist Kids) and Ben Johnstone (Rochester, N.Y./RIT). Both competed in the Below 85 kg/187.5 lbs. division.

Funicello was beaten by Augusto Midana of FILA Centre, who went on to capture the bronze medal.

Johnstone was eliminated by Plamen Kirov of Bulgaria, who finished sixth.

The World Beach Championships was a single-elimination tournament, so neither U.S. wrestler competed again.

The competition featured about 34 competitors from 10 different nations.

In the men’s division, winning the Under 85 kg division was Bulgaria’s Nikolai Stanchev, while capturing the Over 85 kg division was Dimitar Kumchev of Bulgaria. Kumchev, a freestyle wrestler who was eighth in the 2008 European Championships, defeated Eldar Kurtanidze of Georgia, a two-time Olympic bronze medalist in freestyle.

In the women’s division, claiming the Under 70 kg/154 lbs. was Isabelle Sambou (FILA Centre), while winning the Over 70 kg/154 lbs. was Annabel Laure Ali (FILA Centre). Sambou, who is from Senegal, has won three African titles in freestyle wrestling.

Winning the Absolute Champion match for men, which pitted the two champions in a challenge match, was Kumchev. The women’s Absolute Champion was Ali.

This was the first time that FILA hosted a World Beach Wrestling Championships as a stand-alone event. In past years, the World Beach event was held as part of the World Wrestling Games.

Funicello entered the event as the only American to win more than one medal at the World Beach Championships. He captured his bronze medals in Antalya, Turkey in 2007 and in Durres, Albania in 2008.

Johnstone was competing in his first World Beach event.

Gli americani hanno fatto un brutto mondiale, eppure i lottatori USA hanno superato delle selezioni dure nel campionato nazionale.
Sono abbastanza sorpreso...

L'unico brasiliano in gara se ne torna a casa con una bella medaglia di bronzo.

On 22 and 23 October, the FILA President went to Thiès, Senegal with the development director to visit the FILA, Olympic Solidarity and Confejes scholarship holders who are training in the FILA international centre. The centre which first brought together 8 freestyle wrestlers trained by the Georgian coach, Vladimer Iashvili has been reinforced by the arrival of 10 female wrestlers from the centre in Tunis under the management of their coach, Ivan Ivanov.

FILA held the first session of the centre’s Board of Administration after one year’s operations and discussed different issues to be settled in order to be fully operational. FILA also reviewed the experience acquired by the wrestlers and their coaches during the 2007 competitions – the African Championships and Games and the senior World Championship in Baku. Training programmes were also addressed in order to lead to a possible qualification of the wrestlers for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

One of the topics was also the career of each wrestler after their stay in the centre as well as the arrival of new scholarship holders who will reinforce the centre in view of the 2012 Olympic Games. The FILA President seized the opportunity to meet with the National federation, the NOCs authorities and the Sports Minister.
